"George
Bridges organised the Greenwich Jazz Festival in its early years
and has been on the committee ever since.
He
took up the double bass at the age of 40 leading and depping for a
number of jazz groups in different styles. Probably his first
musical love was for the revival style of New Orleans Jazz and his
band the "Dumaine Street New Orleans Jazz Band," on the
local scene for 25 years, stays true to that tradition. George has
visited New Orleans three times and played with local musicians in
Bourbon Street bars.
Like
many bass players he started playing tea chest bass with skiffle
bands and still fulfils that role, albeit with a string bass, in
Rebels without Applause. On retirement from college
management he saw a gap in the market for a daytime gig. The
Brunch Bunch play every Thursday lunchtime in the Lord Hood public
house, with special guests from time to time.
Also
interested in jazz education, particularly aimed at beginners and
adults taking up playing later in life, he founded CL Jazz which
has been running residential weeks and workshops for over twenty
years. This showcases the groups which get together from
these events at every Riverfront Festival."
