Gunther was born in Linz, Austria. He started playing classical piano at the age of seven and then went on to study music at Music University in Graz, Austria before moving on to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. 

Since 1997 Gunther has been living in London. He's has made quite a mark with Alyn Shipton of The Times, in a recent live review noting: “Most impressive is Gunther Kuermyr his nimble solo lines belied impressive strength, and he also kept the rhythm section moving forward energetically”
